Water Quality Monitoring

"Water Quality" includes clarity, nutrient chemical levels, oxygen content, and aquatic plant life. To help detect long-term trends and potential risks, the Belgrade Lakes Association has established a comprehensive Long-Term Water Quality Monitoring Plan. This plan includes:

  • Biweekly Monitoring – Regular checks of Secchi depth, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and phosphorus during summer months via the Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program (VLMP).
  • Gloeotrichia Observation Program – Tracks bloom patterns by location, severity, and duration.
  • Bloom Sampling – Periodic analysis of bloom samples to identify cyanobacteria species.
  • Courtesy Boat Inspections – Helps prevent the introduction of invasive species like milfoil at public ramps.
  • Invasive Plant Patrols – Volunteer-led surveys throughout the summer for early detection.
  • Merganser Monitoring – Volunteers report sightings of mergansers to support the Swimmer’s Itch Program.
  • Additional Monitoring – Conducted as needed for new or specific water quality concerns.

Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program (VLMP)

The Maine Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program is a statewide nonprofit focused on protecting Maine’s lakes through science-based data collection and public education. The VLMP promotes lake stewardship by connecting citizens, technical experts, and agencies across the state.

Since its inception, VLMP has trained hundreds of citizen scientists and built a robust data management system to support lake health. The program was honored with the Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence in 2005.

These dedicated volunteers play a crucial role in protecting our lakes. Their efforts provide the data that guide long-term water quality strategies for the Belgrade Lakes region.
