    <description>

As of November 25, 2025

Upper Long - November 9, Secchi 5.70 m (18.7 ft). Fully mixed

Lower Long - November 9, Secchi 5.50 m (18.0 ft). Still stratified below 20 meters and anoxic below 24m.

Great Pond site 1 (East of Hoyt I.) - Secchi 6.1m (20.0 ft). Fully mixed Great Pond site 2 (West of Hoyt I.) - Secchi 6.2m (20.3 ft). Fully mixed

So far in 2025 that&amp;#39;s 17 sampling visits to Great Pond and 16 to Long Pond. We have another visit planned to lower Long coming up next week, and once it&amp;#39;s fully mixed that will be it for Long Pond for the season. We have one more visit to Great Pond site 1 scheduled for early December as part of a collaborative NSF (National Science Foundation) project. We have to sample for that project once a month for 3 years straight (including December through April!) so we may be reaching out to schedule a ride on the air boat sometime soon.

    <title>2025 Audubon Loon Count</title>
    <link>https://www.belgradelakesassociation.org/Resources/News-and-Announcements/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/542/2025-Audubon-Loon-Count</link>
    <description>Maine Audubon&amp;#39;s Annual Loon Count was sucessfully conducted on Saturdsay, July 19th, 2025

For four decades, Maine Audubon has been engaging volunteers across Maine in conservation efforts to help common loons. One component of this is the annual loon count, scheduled this year for 7&amp;ndash;7:30 a.m. Saturday, July 15.

This event has engaged hundreds of volunteers every year since 1983. On the third Saturday of July, participants head out in canoes, kayaks, and pontoon boats, or observe from the shore, to tally the loons they see. Last year, more than 1,600 volunteers of all ages counted loons on 361 lakes, the largest number of lakes surveyed since Maine Audubon&amp;rsquo;s Loon Count began, according to a news release from Maine Audubon Loon Count Coordinator Hannah Young.

&amp;ldquo; The loon count is this incredible moment in time where everyone across Maine who&amp;rsquo;s involved is doing the same thing at the same time. It&amp;rsquo;s a really wonderful way for people to show how much they value their lakes and their loons, and we would love to keep that going,&amp;rdquo; said Young.

Maine Audubon uses the statewide snapshot to estimate the annual population and track population trends. The information helps biologists, state officials, and Maine lake users understand more about the loons&amp;rsquo; status and the health of Maine&amp;rsquo;s lakes.

Data are used to determine where struggling nesting loons need help, and how to reduce loon disturbance and mortality.

Since the count&amp;rsquo;s inception, the number of adult loons in the southern half of the state has doubled, from an initial estimate of fewer than 1,500 to over 3,000 in 2022. This is due in part to conservation efforts like the Maine lead tackle ban and Fish Lead Free Initiative (fishleadfree.org/me), which have helped reduce the number of adult loons that die from swallowing lead tackle.

Maine has the largest population of loons in the eastern United States, which makes the breeding success of loons here critical to the population at large. But plenty of threats to loons exist. Trauma, especially from boat strikes (when a boat collides with a loon), is a leading cause of adult loon deaths in Maine, as is lead poisoning from ingesting lost and discarded lead tackle. Loon counters also continue to report loon nests being flooded and eggs washing out of the nest by boat wakes.

Young says there&amp;rsquo;s always the need for more counters, especially in the northern part of the state.

No experience is necessary.

For more information, email conserve@maineaudubon.org or visit maineaudubon.org/loons.

For the results of the 2025 Belgrade Lakes Audubon Loon Count on July 19, 2025, Great Pond counted 73 adults and 5 chicks. &amp;nbsp;Long Pond counted 8 adults and 2 chicks. &amp;nbsp; The reader must appreciate the data, that as good and as necessary as it is, it still only represents a limited 30 minute time period in the life of our loons. &amp;nbsp;Weather, waves, lighting conditions all influence the count. &amp;nbsp; In reality, on this particular date, both Great and Long Ponds had 8 chicks each. &amp;nbsp;Unfortunately, by Labor Day, we had lost all of the 8 Great Pond chicks and all but 3 of the Long Pond chicks due to natural causes to the best of our knowledge.
